I was just thinking Do you have a riff or two you always play at the local guitar shop......When that shiney new axe is just begging you to take it off the wall and strum it for a while!!!Or for you on-line shoppers, when the big brown truck pulls up with your newest purchase.....Do you have a riff/song that just always seems to get played first? For me always seems to be Bark at the Moon by Ozzy then a little Crazt Train always followed by Hell's Bells and Back in Black by AC DC........I don't know why but it always seems to go in that order

In my local store, (which is incredibly friendly and welcoming) they have a "banned riffs" list, the items on the list vary from month to month but they always include the following
Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple Stairway to Heaven - Led Zep Paranoid - Black Sabbath
These are mainstays on the list coz the guys in the store are just sick of hearing them !! Any of us regulars who hang out there who "accidentally" hit any of these are forced to pay a penalty, such as a donation in the charity box, changing the filters in the coffee machine etc etc.
May seem a little draconian, but it makes the young kids laugh.
My own favourite for the store is Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan ........ "Who are they ?" I hear you ask, check them out and marvel at the ability and inventiveness of Walter Becker.

Hehe, "banned riffs" list... funny but it makes sense. ;D I remember we had an "irish pub" in our town for a couple of years. You could imbibe "Guinness" and "Kilkenny´s" and it was a place full of music. Once or twice a week there was some kind of "open stage" and everybody who could play the guitar and sing was invited to do so... but as well they had a "banned songs" list... On it: Wonderwall from Oasis, American Pie and Hotel California..." Same thing as in the guitar store... just to protect the staff who´s ears might be ringing already from those ever repeated songs, repeated most often in not the best quality, hehe!

With me, it's usually "Sting Me" by the Black Crowes. It's an awesome blues riff, plus most people have never heard it, so you don't annoy the staff.
Mainly tho, it's cause it took me SO EFFIN' LONG to learn it, I'm using it every chance I get, dammit!!!

I like to play a little Crazy Train, Carry on Wayward Son, Rock and Roll, Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, whatever I can think of that I know how to play...then just a lot of different chord progressions/scales.

I usually like to play Over The Hills and Far Away by Led Zeppelin, then, of course, STH, then a little AC/DC, and then a few of my own riffs

Never really thought about it until now but for me the song seems to be Jessica by the Allman Brothers Band. I add the first 4 piano notes on the "E" string then strum the chords. It gives me a good idea as to tone and possible fret buzz. Then the lead gives me a good feel of the action.
If I am playing on an amp then its time for some bluesy distortion where I play a little Can't ya hear me knocking, or Midnight Rambler by the Rolling Stones or I heard it on the X by ZZ Top.
If the guitar passes both of those tests then I go full crunch and play a few of my old speed metal and mosh tunes.
Then I have a good overall feel of the guitar.

Back in my day you could hear "Sunshine Of Your Love" being played from every corner of the guitar stores.

Ol Geezer, hehe. Well when I bought my guitar about 4-5months ago I didn't know any full songs, or even timed riffs I played layla on it and bought it. Then when my brother bought his I tried it out in the store and played Stairway to heaven (of course), sunshine of your love, back in black & smoke on the water (of course )
