OK, This weeks CD review is from an all time favorite of mine and a very underrated guitarist.
Brian Setzer Orchestra, The Ultimate Collection hit the streets in the US today. Some of you might remember the name Brian Setzer from his days as the leader of The Stray Cats (The Stray Cats are on a reunion tour of Europe now). Brian had the idea to have a guitar as the main instrument in front of a 17 piece orchestra. The results are fantastic! If you like a little bit of Big Band mixed with some Jazz, Rockabilly, and kick ass Rock then this 2 CD set is for you.

I love Brian Setzer's work. The Stray Cat stuff, his solo stuff. Don't have any of his big band in my collection but have heard him. Like it all.

If you like funky music combined with a good portion of metal you must love Living Color! Their guitarist Vernon Reid kicks some serious ***! Check them out...

Hey Guys...Currently, I am listening to Gary Moore "Blues Alive", an older cd but still a favorite. That guy can really play. I also recommend Robben Ford's most recent effort "Keep On Running"...he is such a talented guitarist and he has a style all his own. Check them out when you get a chance!

well, you might be right about it, but in fact I hadn't heard about it when I went into the store, so it was love at first sight for me... clapton might have done better things, I don't know, sad truth is, I don't know too much of his work, just some cream things and a bit of the unplugged album. and I hadn't known all those johnson songs, i mean I had heard about him, but never actually heard any of his songs, I am just beginning to get into the whole blues thing, you know So it was a nice start for me. Hey JoMan if you are just getting into Clapton then I have an album that is a must have for you. Its some of Erics unsung works of art. The album/band is called "Derek and the Dominoes". If you can find it and don't like it I will buy it off you and pay for the shipping. No joke I mean it. A track called "Key to the Highway" changed the way I play guitar forever. p.s. I have heard some of "Me and Mr. Johnson" and I really like.

Guys
Check out "The soul sessions!" by a 16 year old Brit girl called Joss Stone, big news in UK and I believe getting plentry of airplay in the USA.
Her voice is just, well, astonishing for a 16 year old, my main reason for purchasing was the band, take a listen, is that "tight" or what.
Anyone interested in learing a bit of funk guitar should have a listen to the guy that does most of the work Willie "Little Beaver" Hale.
Inspiring album
9/10

Oh, yeah, I just read that post, i'll check it out, but I don't think I'll actually be dissatisfied with it! ;D ;D And I currently listen to Franz Ferdinand, the Europeans here have certainly heard about them, dont know about america. They sound quite old-fashioned to me in some regards, but of course different. I like the surreal feel of their songs, like The Doors... So if you havent done so already, check out some of their stuff! "Take Me Out" is the bestknown I think, but IMO not their best song, but still great.

That Derek and The Dominos stuff features not only Clapton, but also gives an insite into the wonders of Duane Allman's playing. Most, if not all of the great slide work on that record is him. For more than you've ever heard of this innovative player, "Duane Allman: An Anthology" is a great place to start. It has sessions with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and more. Truly a great find if you can get in on vinyl, but CD would be nice, too.

I took a look at my CD collection recently and there was one album that caught my eye after quite a while of not listening to it. Frank Zappa´s "Live in New York". Brilliant stuff, Zappa at his best... maybe there is someone of you who did not pay attention to this genius up to now and wants to check out. I highly recommend this album, "Joe´s Garage" and "Sheik Yerbouti" may have been somewhat commercial, but "Live in New York" seems to be another fine album to get to know Frank Zappa and his weird music. Zappa may not be everyone´s cup of tea, though. His music is quite bizarre... I often wonder how he and his band kept this all together live on stage.

According to the legend, Steel, Zappa never did any drugs, and would not let someone who did them into the band. You'd HAVE to be sober to pull off some of the stuff they did....Also, check out his compilation called simply "Solos" On it you will find about 30 reasons that this guy is a vastly under-rated guitarist.

Yeah Zappa's wierd enough without drugs. Ol Frank is definatly under rated as a guitarist. He was just so wierd that I guess it was hard to see all the talent he possesed. Have you ever seen that video of his called Inca Roads or something like that? Its like clamation and wild as hell. Ol Frank may have been straight but the director of that video had to be trippin on something.

I have heard that just before Zappa died, he was working on music on computer that was so fast humans would be unable to play it, but the mind could still decipher it. " All hands prepare for Ludicrous Speed ! !"
