Believe it or don't. I got to meet Zakk Wylde back stage when I was a stagehand at Billy Bob's Texas. He was traveling around with the Mississippi Headhunters just before he put out that Bluegrass sounding album of his. I didn't get star struck but the guy that introduced us was a dork and embarrassed me . He goes " Zakk meet Zac he plays guitar too". I wanted to draw back and hit the guy. Zakk played it off as I tried to and we had a good talk. He was real easy to talk to, and kind fo laid back, just regular folk. Never dawned on me to get an autograph until I had already gone back to work. By then it was too late. There are a few more but thats another post.

You may laugh when I tell you I worked with a famous guitarist and didn't know who he really was till I lost touch with him.... I used to engineer and edit dialog recording for educational PC games (I'm in Southern California) and we always had in a bunch of great voiceover talent. This one guy was my favorite 'cause he controlled his dynamic range so well and kept in character, and could even recall voices he'd done weeks earlier and easily match them for "pickup" lines. At the time, he was doing a lot of fill-in voices for "The Critic" animated TV show, including the singing toilet on the premiere episode and the guy that ran the restaurant. He invited me to see him perform at an improv club (gave me free tickets even), doing comedy and music with a troupe. He did a great Bob Dylan impression. I only knew him by name and as that "voice" guy and comedic actor (he played a doctor on Drew Carey), not as a famous rock musician and former producer of Foghat -- Nick Jameson! I found this link to his musical legacy...

Only three,.....
I met Billy Gibbons at a night club here in Memphis, back in 1976. We bought each other shots of "Wild Turkey", had a nice little chat. He seemed to be a nice guy, laid back and friendly.
I had the honor and pleasure to meet and talk with Leo Kottke backstage after one of his concerts here in Memphis in 1973. He is a very funny gentleman, with a keen sense of humor, although very humble and down to earth. I do think he is one of the guitarist that has influenced me the most. Ohhhhh,...... to be able to play 1/1000 as good as he,...*sigh*
I literally "ran" into Ace Frehley, or he "ran" into me on the dance floor at a night club here in Memphis. (this was after one of KISS's concerts). He invited me and my lady to join him and his entourage, (mostly babes),...LOL We bought each other rounds of drinks, and had a very kewl time....(that is of what I can remember of the evening),....LOL. (this was back in 1976)
Well,....that has been my experiences with meeting famous guitar players.

My dad met Ronnie Wood back in '98. My dad drives a bus in the disabled division of the bus company and one of his passengers was a sound tech and so my dad pulls right into skydome (hughe stadium in Toronto) and drops the guy off. Ron is up doing a sound check and stops everything to come down and check out the bus. My dad said it was pretty damn cool talking with ron wood, apparently Ronnie was fasinated (Sp?) with the buses hydroaulics

I know this is a little off topic, but I met Eric Carr (ex drummer for KISS) many years ago in a little rock club in Elmont, NY. It was right after (about a week) they were on MTV taking off their makeup. Anyway. He was there to check out a local band that night and I spotted him standing by himself in the corner. When my friend and I went over after the set, he was gone. We go to the bar and sit down and I turn around and there he was sitting next to me. He was being totally ignored by the bartender, He looks at me and asks how to get his attention. I told him to wave his cash so the barkeep could see it and it worked. He was so impressed he bought us a few rounds of drinks. I looked at him and said "you look just like the drummer from KISS." He says "well, that's because I am." No one else recognized him, so we sat for a long time talking and telling us about the new show KISS was ready to do for the "Lick it Up" tour. He said he was done early from rehearsals in NYC and wanted to check out this local band that night. To make a long story short we talked for about 1 1/2 hours and had quite a few drinks (that he mostly paid for.) Sadly a few years later he died of that brain tumor. He was a realy nice, down to earth guy who wasn't full of himself. Coincidently, when he passed away in a NYC hospital, my wife's cousin was his nurse. Again, I know he didn't play guitar but I thought it was a good story. I just wish I can find the business card he autographed for me that night.

Up until a few years ago, my dad was part owner of a rock radio station here in Illinois. I got to meet a lot of my favorite bands at the station as well as get autographs, tickets, backstage passes and more for a lot of shows. Damn.....I miss those days.....
Some of my more memorable encounters were with James & Lars from Metallica, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, all the guys from Carolines Spine, Johnny Lang, Days of the New, Slash, Weird Al Yankovich and quite a few more that just aren't coming to mind. I partied quite a bit with the guys from Mudvayne before they got "big". REO Speedwagon is from my hometown. My drummers dad hung out with their bassist back in the day so we all got to hang out after a big "homecoming" show they did a few years back. Kenny Wayne Sheppard grewq up with and still remains quite close with a girl I work with. I've hung with him at a few back yard parties at her place and had the chance to jam with him....good guy.
From my experince, most of these people are very down to earth and pretty cool. It's people like Axl Rose and the guys from Metallica that give everyone else a bad rep.
Later -

Well. me and the mates in my former band we used to go to a lot of Psychotic Waltz Shows here in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, on this occasions we sometimes talked with their guitarist Dan Rock and their lead singer Buddy Lackey. No real big and famous superstars, but highly talented people and their band was and still is an underground legend in progressive metal. Wooohoo, but our drummer came across a drum set on Ebay, and guess what? It belonged to Herman Rarebell from the Scorpions, ...well he visited Herman in Munich and bought this drum set. He is still in contact with him and guess what stands in our rehearsal room since a couple of months? An original "Ex-Scorpions" drum set in "all chrome" finish... Our drummer told me this is the drumset that was on a Scorpions European tour in 1992 or 1993. ;D D'oh!

Those are some really great posts yall. I would love to meet most of those guys yall mentioned. As I siad in my first post I have met a few more, most yall prob won't care about or know of since they are mostly country.(I worked at Billy Bob's Texas for 6 years as a stagehand) So you name em I have most likely met em up through 1995 that is. On a side note I used to hang out with Pantera before they went global, which ain't that big of a deal since they are from here.(Ft.Worth Dallas Arlington) I have also run into The Toadies half a dozen times. Ok well thats all I can think of right now.

I know a ton of indy bands who are all shades of awesome but whom nobody will have heard of. I guess the closest I've come to a rock star of sorts is that I'm John Cougar Mellencamp's fourth or fifth cousin. Never met the guy, but I suppose that counts for something. Ty

OK, I've run into Ric Ocasek of the Cars several times here in NYC. The last time he was in the Guitar Center here with his daughter (?-I guess), doing shopping (?!)
Oh yeah, I don't know if this counts, but Eric Clapton stepped on my wife's foot while getting out of a cab here a while back. . .

Jimi Hendrix, outside the Troy, NY, National Guard Armory, in August 1968. I was hanging out at the back of the place with some people before the show. I didn`t have the $ for the ticket, so I figured I could at least hear the concert from outside the big overhead door. Was I ever surprised when Jimi himself arrived and inquiring about my plight, invited us all in for the show. We had to listen from under the stage, but who was I to complain!? After the concert we all partied with Jimi, Noel, and Mitch, for a short while. That was truly the best show I`ve ever attended, and a huge incentive to get to Woodstock the following Summer.

Ok if this were a contest JimBoe just won. lol ;D
Ok I can't compete with that. But I am gonna lay it all on the table just for show.. All IN.. My Dad took LuAnn Barton to Austin to hook up with Stevie Ray Vaughn way back in the day, and got to hang out with them all for a few days at the old Armadillo Headquarters. ( Yea Dad)
I got to hang out at Willy Nelsons former golf course for 3 days. Stayed in his road manager,s condo. (Poody) And partied ,played golf and got generaly wasted in the process. Didn't get to play with Willy but I did get to watch them in the studio for a bit. ( he's a real nice guy) And how did I get to do this you may ask?. Well I was hanging out with Joey Floyd who is a personal friend of Willy's and met him early in his life by playing Willy's son in the movie Honneysuckle Rose, before going on to play in several bands and is currently playing guitar for Toby Kieth. He is the long hair one in the I Love This Bar video. I have known Joey from his band El Dorado who used to play Billy Bob's alot.
Ok thats all I got.
