But we have to hate the drummers anyway! (joke continued from bass section). I've been most influenced by Tim Kasher of Cursive, who are one of the most unique and creative bands around on guitar, the Guitarist from Mineral, as well as Jimi Hendrix, who basically teaches anyone who listens to him to try crazy stuff cause it just might sound cool. Acoustically I'm a big fan of Bright Eyes as a whole, but he always kicks open the envelope of what one can and should do with an acoustic guitar as well as what he lays over the tracks. I got into slide because of him, and this is an emo band we're talking about. On bass, I'm mostly influenced by Nate Mendel from Sunny Day Real Estate and Stephan, bassist of the best Phoenix band I've run across, Drawing Down the Sun (RIP). Since I"m sure most of you have no idea who the bands I've listed are, my tastes are mostly classified as emo, post-hardcore, artcore (it's even more pretentious than it sounds), etc. In general it's derivative of underground music and is generally the matured version of punk bands who got good and sick of playing stuff that didn't stimulate them. Some of the most heartfelt, talented, creative music I've ever heard has come from this (piano/drum driven geniuses, Desert City Soundtrack for instance). I'd highly reccommend you guys checking out some of the bands I've listed, if you have an open mind and don't regard instrumental talent to be limited to 5 minute solos then you should get a kick out of it. Cheers Ty

As for me, Clapton has been a heavy influence. Hence my solos tend to be very blues-rock infused.

"Looks That Kill"--the riff that just couldn't be denied...
My very biggest influence for playing has to be Robin Trower. He took ideas from Hendrix, and made them into something all his own. When I saw him live, he was amazing. I like lots of other stuff, and right now, the big thing for me is funk ala P.Funk...Poets of Rhythm...and Karl Denson(the Mike Tyson of Funk)

Whoa!!! Too many things to pin down to one category.
But I have to to say that usually gets me going is the British-based blues of the 60's and 70's. The early Stones, Yardbirds, Cream, Led Zep, etc. They took something truly American and re-invented it and made it their own.
That's not to say that I don't love a little Steely Dan, The Cure, The Gypsy Kings. . .
